With swirling synths and cycling guitars, Austin-based The Boxing Lesson are turning out solid psychedelic indie rock. The three piece outfit diversify their sound with samples and playing around with synthesizer features, hitting you with a wall of sound that reminds me a lot of Brian Jonestown Massacre, which is a very good thing. The band's latest album, Wild Streaks & Windy Days is very polished, and draws a lot on classic psych-rock influences like Pink Floyd and The Cure. They're headed out on tour throughout the Midwest starting in February (check their MySpace for dates) in support of the album, and I'm hoping they'll make it eastward at some point. Here are a couple of my favorite songs off WS&WT:The Boxing Lesson - Dark Side of the Moog [divshare] [SF]
Though the song overall is more guitar-centered than the title would suggest, I love the intro, and this track gets the album started off by enveloping you in sonic waves.
The Boxing Lesson - Muerta [divshare] [SF]
The most Floyd-like out of the songs, 'Muerta' has a low, droning synth running below high, spacey vocals, and makes good use of a harpsichord-like synth to chime away above the guitars.
