Get Down With The Sickness

After having a discussion over the weekend about how I had miraculously not been sick so far this school year, I woke up yesterday with a chest cold sitting deep in my chest, providing the pleasant sensation of constantly having a boot pressing outward from inside my ribs. I am appealing to the gods of health/generic 'Tussin' cough syrup to save me from the sickness.

Luckily the lack of wellness didn't hit until Sunday morning, because the rest of the weekend was pretty great. I got a fair bit of work done, saw lots of friends, and generally enjoyed myself. On Friday, Rumpus, the magazine I write for and used to edit came out with its annual 50 Most Beautiful issue, which is always fun. As always, I have my quibbles with some of the people who were chosen, but it turned out well overall, and I was happy with the articles I wrote. Interviewing nice people always makes it easier. After a variety of events that night, I had to be up early Saturday morning for a trip into New York. I'd won a lottery from my college to have a lunch and then go see the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center. Lunch was at Bar Boulud, and was excellent. Chestnut pudding with cassis sorbet for dessert was a definite highlight. The ballet was very enjoyable (though I have to admit that I slept through most of the first dance). I'd never seen ballet live before, and I was very impressed. My favorite work was definitely the last one, Philip Glass's 'Pieces of Glass.' Absolutely fantastic. (Oh snap, Philip Glass has a MySpace, too!)

Then it was back to New Haven for another night out, and then more work and illness the past two days. In keeping with that, here's some sickness-themed music. I've got lots more new stuff in my inbox, so hopefully I'll be able to get to that early in the week.

Kid Koala's album 'Some of My Best Friends Are DJs' was one of the first electronic music albums I ever bought. It was playing in the Bull Moose store in Portland and they always have the current album that's in rotation up at the front counter so you can see what it is. I dug the jazzy looping and experimental rambling, so I decided to get it. 'Flu Season' is a really short track, but I love the concept of it, both musically and as a linguistic joke.

And how could I pass up the opportunity to post M.I.A.'s 'Bird Flu' off her debut album Kala?

Stay healthy out there.
