Free Beirut!

I hadn't listened to Beirut at all before last summer, but now their glorious mix of folk, indie, Balkan gyspsy, and a dash of carnival organ grinder music has me hooked. Zach Condon has assembled a great band around himself, and the new album 'March of the Zapotec/Holland EP' has more of the great sound that has been winning the band fans around the world (apparently they've become popular in Brazil, thanks to 'Elephant Gun' being used as the theme song to a TV show). The second part of the album, the Holland EP, is actually under the name 'Realpeople,' which Condon uses for electronic music. Right now, you can download 'My Night With The Prostitute from Marseille' for free on Amazon, and if you like it, I'd highly encourage you to buy the whole album! Thanks to the 8BitKid for this tip via facebook.

Speaking of Condon and electronic music, he helped Brandon Bethancourt get Alaska in Winteroff the ground a few years ago, and Alaska in Winter continues to turn out great, fast-paced, but mildly melancholy music. Bethancourt is living in Berlin now, and I recently found out that I will be presenting a paper at a conference in Potsdam, Germany in September, so I'm hoping to get a chance to visit Berlin and check out the city's music and art scene, which is, from all accounts, incredible. Check out Alaska in Winter's fantastic albums 'Dance Party in the Balkans' and 'Holiday.' Bethancourt also looks pretty sweet rocking the keytar.
