I never used to like SMD. It took me a while to come around. I liked the original Simian, although I'll be the first to admit that I never listened to them at all before Justice made themselves famous remixing 'Never Be Alone' into 'We Are Your Friends.' Then I started in, and discovered that 'Never Be Alone' wasn't even really a good song in the Simian scheme of things. They could turn out some absolutely brilliant pop songs.
But alas, the band broke up. Simon Lord has gone on to become part of The Black Ghosts, whose self-titled album was one of my favorites of last year. Meanwhile, I was always a bit turned off by the blipping and beeping of SMD. Now, though, I find myself fully a convert, eagerly anticipating the upcoming album.
'Audacity of Huge' is a commentary on conspicuous consumption, rehashing the Beatles' adage that "Money can't buy me love." The song and it's accompanying brightly colored and beautifully shot video are both hilarious for the incongruity and absurdity of the "luxury items" presented as part of the narrator's resume of goods. Outdated technology, celebrities, a honey-covered tennis player...who wouldn't want to get with this guy? The song is addicting, though. Check out the great video and also a remix from Naum Gabo. The single doesn't come out for a bit, but you can listen to the original and get more details from Too Many Sebastians.
Bonus: Here's some just plain Simian, off their album 'We Are Your Friends,' which, as a friend, I highly recommend.
