The Real Dan Black Stands Up

I first started listening to Dan Black's work last summer when the late great blog Good Weather for Airstrikes posted a couple covers he did. Now he's starting to pump out his own original tunes, and the results are great. Black has just come out with a new video for his song 'Symphonies.' The video pays tribute to classic films and is generally fantastic, but the entire time I listen to the song, I'm a little distracted. This is because the instrumentals backing it are the same that Black used last year for his cover of Biggie's 'Hypnotize.' I watch the 'Symphonies' video and keep waiting for Black to talk about twisting cabbage and people winding up in a Brooklyn basement. 'Symphonies' stands well on its own, though, and I'm looking forward to hearing more Dan Black tunes. [Note: I'm naturally inclined to find Dan Black songs a little funny anyways, since a friend from home since pretty much birth is also named Dan Black.]

Here's Dan's cover of Notorious B.I.G.'s 'Hypnotize,' released in 1997 off of 'Life After Death.'

And here's a remix of Dan's new track 'Symphonies' by current darlings of the blogs and electronic music scene, Passion Pit, whose new album 'Manners' you can now pick up.

Bonus: Dan Black also did his own cover/remix of The Rolling Stones' classic track 'Jumping Jack Flash,' which, while not quite as arresting as 'HYPNTZ,' is still damn cool. Definitely check it out. Try to pick out the samples in the backing music.

I love his use of a boombox live for drumbeats, hehe.
